As more contractors look to modernise their fleets with GNSS machine control, cost and complexity remain key considerations – particularly for smaller operators. The new Trimble BX992 GNSS receiver, now available through SITECH, is helping to lower that barrier to entry while still delivering the performance and functionality Trimble is known for.
Designed specifically for Trimble Earthworks Excavators, the BX992 offers high-accuracy positioning with a cab-mounted, shock, isolated installation that is permanently mounted to the machine.
SITECH Solutions sales representative Joe Coles said the BX992 was perfect.for smaller contractors or owner-operators who only need the GNSS system on the one excavator.
“It’s a way to access Trimble’s proven technology at a much lower investment,” he said.
While the BX992 trades off portability for cost, it is this very characteristic that opens up its appeal to different segments of the market.
For smaller businesses, the lower capital cost is very attractive. For larger contractors, it’s the added security and simplicity.
“With the BX992, there’s no need to climb on machines at the end of every day to remove expensive hardware,” Joe said.
“This is because the main receiver is mounted inside the cab and only lower-cost Zephyr3 antennas are visible externally. There’s nothing valuable left exposed. It saves time and reduces theft risk – especially on remote or unsecured sites.”
Proven on major projects
The BX992 is already in use on smaller civil sites as well as major infrastructure sites, including the Prospect Reservoir treatment plant in Western Sydney — part of an $838 million Sydney Water upgrade delivered by Suez and Acciona.
Sam Weerheim, owner of Weerheim Earthmoving, recently had the system installed on his new Hidromek 145 excavator, marking his first foray into machine control.
“I used to work with people who had Trimble GPS and it always seemed like the best – easy to use and reliable,” Sam said.
“This is the first system I’ve bought myself and it’s been great. We’ve already dug one basin with it, and it just works. I only needed a 10-minute run-through to get going.”
Sam, who services the Greater Sydney area, praised SITECH Solutions for their responsive installation and support.
“We had a tight deadline – just two weeks – and the guys from SITECH got it installed really quickly. They were super helpful and friendly. Honestly, I haven’t even needed to call them since, but I know they’re there if I do,” he said. “Any new machines I get, I’ll be using the same system again.”
Simple set-up, solid performance
The BX992 is fully compatible with the Trimble Earthworks Grade Control Platform, offering real-time grade guidance and high-precision positioning.
Because the receiver is mounted inside the cab, it’s protected from damage and tampering, and operators no longer have to haul equipment on and off machines each day.
From a safety perspective, this also reduces the risk of climbing accidents and eliminates the all-too-common scenario of an expensive receiver being left on a track or dropped from a cab.
Backed by SITECH Solutions’ industry-leading after-sales support, the BX992 combines simplicity, security, and cost-efficiency — making machine control more accessible than ever.
“The market’s tough right now. Contractors are watching every dollar, but they still want to win work and stay competitive,” Joe said.
“The BX992 is helping them do that – it’s getting more people into GPS jobs that they might’ve otherwise missed out on.”
The Trimble BX992 GNSS receiver is available now through SITECH Solutions.
