Treat scrapers like royalty

Scott Lidster of Australian Earth Training says operators need to work smart with scrapers.

Scrapers are the go-to machines for moving big loads of material quickly and efficiently.

Whether it’s an elevating, twin power or an open bowl scraper, these things are the kings when moving dirt in their economic zone of application.

But to really make the most of them, you need to operate smart. Whether you’re new to scrapers or looking to refine your skills, here are my Top 5 tips to keep things running smoothly and boost your productivity.

  1. Start with a walk-around inspection

Before you hop in the cab, take a few minutes for a quick walk-around inspection.

Check for any signs of wear, loose bolts, or potential issues.

Pay attention to the hydraulic lines, tyre condition, and fluid levels.

A small issue caught early can save you from major downtime later. It’s time well spent!

  1. Adjust to ground conditions

Not all terrain is created equal, and scrapers need to be set up right depending on the job site.

If you’re working in soft ground, like sand, keep your depth and speed under control to avoid getting bogged.

On harder surfaces, make sure your cutting edge is in good shape and set at the appropriate angle for easy loading.

Always consider the material you’re dealing with to avoid unnecessary strain on the machine.

  1. Master the art of loading

Getting the bowl loaded properly is key to efficiency.

When approaching the cut, ease into it smoothly — don’t mash the throttle, or you’ll end up with wheel slip and wasted effort.

Use the right amount of downward pressure to ensure you’re pulling in material efficiently.

Once you’re full, make sure to transition smoothly to hauling.

And remember, quicker loading means faster cycle times, which adds up to more material moved over the day.

Keeping your cycle times tight is a great way to boost overall productivity.

  1. Use the technology to your advantage

If your machine’s equipped with the latest GPS and automation tech, don’t let it go to waste.

Caterpillar’s Grade Control and Load Assist feature can help maintain a consistent grade and improve your accuracy.

These features take some of the guesswork out of operating and help you stay efficient while reducing operator fatigue over long shifts.

  1. Stay comfortable and safe

Operating a scraper can be tough on the body, especially during long hours.

Take the time to adjust the seat and controls so they’re comfortable for you.

Caterpillar designs its cabs with ergonomics in mind, so make the most of it.

And of course, always wear your seat belt and stay alert to any changes in ground conditions or your surroundings — safety is non-negotiable.

By following these five tips, you’ll not only get the job done quicker and smoother, but you’ll also extend the life of your equipment and reduce downtime.

Scrapers are powerful machines, and when you know how to handle them right, you’ll keep projects on track and make the whole process more efficient.
