Program aims to prevent psychosocial harm at work

The Western Australian Government is offering $4 million in grants aimed at helping workplaces better understand and manage psychosocial hazards, with the initiative expected to support safer working environments across high-risk industries.

The government has launched the second round of its Mentally Healthy Workplaces Grant Program, which funds initiatives aimed at preventing psychological harm at work.

The program will distribute $1 million each year over the next four years, with eligible organisations able to apply for grants of up to $200,000.

For industries such as mining, where workers can face psychosocial hazards including fatigue, isolation, and high-pressure operational environments, the program aims to improve how these risks are identified and managed in the workplace.

Funding is intended to support practical projects that improve awareness of psychosocial hazards and strengthen understanding of workplace health and safety obligations.

The program will be delivered in two stages, beginning with efforts to build awareness and identify psychosocial risks within workplaces.

The second stage will focus on developing strategies and tools that help organisations address those risks in day-to-day operations.

The grants are designed to support new and innovative initiatives that workers and employers can easily understand and apply in real workplace settings.

The initiative also complements the suicide prevention focus of the Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Program Support Fund.

Applications for the grant program are now open through the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety.
