In the early hours at a job site, before the hum of engines and the clang of steel, there’s a quiet moment. A machine operator climbs into the cab, coffee in hand, mind juggling the day’s tasks. The operator is experienced. Focused. But also human.
We’ve known that human brains, remarkable as they are, evolved not for precision, but for survival. They conserve energy, filter noise, and make fast decisions. But those same traits — so useful in the wild — can be overwhelmed in high-risk environments like construction.
Safety can be thought of like a river. Downstream are the outcomes we all want: fewer injuries, reduced incidents, lower insurance claims, and a healthier safety culture. We believe those downstream outcomes are achieved by focusing on the upstream components of a resilient safety culture.
The four components of a resilient safety culture are leadership, ownership, mindsets, and the safety systems that catalyse safer behaviours. Early identification of job-site hazards happens upstream where perception is formed, attention is paid, and decisions are made. That’s where we focus our efforts, because the further upstream we intervene, the more powerful the outcome.
The power to see, mitigate, and manage
On a job site, misperception can be fatal. A study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health¹ found that workers recognise only 47 per cent of job-site hazards, which means that most go undetected.

The cognitive cost of attention
The human brain is a high-performance engine. It consumes 25 per cent of your body’s energy, more than any other organ.
And like any engine, it has limits. In human factors, we call this ‘cognitive capacity’. It’s the mental bandwidth available to process information, make decisions, and stay alert.
Think of it like a bank account. Every time you pay attention, you’re making a withdrawal. And when your account runs low, errors creep in.
That’s why we developed the Cat Seat Belt Reminder System, which is a universal upgrade solution. It’s not just about compliance — it’s a proxy for engagement. When operators buckle up, it signals attention to detail. When they don’t, the system provides a gentle nudge. And if the behaviour persists, an external lamp alerts co-workers and supervisors — an upstream signal that something downstream may go wrong.
The Cat Detect Driver Safety System, or DSS, is a universal upgrade solution. It monitors facial features to detect fatigue or distraction.
When a lapse is detected, the system alerts the operator, records the event, and sends the data to Caterpillar’s Safety System Monitoring Centre. Last year alone, Caterpillar intervened over a million times, nudging operators back to attention, far upstream the Safety River.

Perception isn’t reality — it’s a story
Perception feels like reality. But it’s not. It’s a story your brain tells you, stitched together from your senses, memory, emotion, and bias. Optimism bias, change blindness, inattention blindness — these aren’t just academic terms. They’re the invisible forces shaping how we perceive the world.
That’s why we developed People Detection. Using intelligent cameras, the system alerts operators when someone enters a machine’s hazard zone.
This technology supplements human perception and situational awareness and is available from the factory, as a Cat machine upgrade, and as a universal aftermarket solution for most machines, regardless of manufacturer.
Or consider 2D E-Fence, E-Ceiling, and E-Swing. These features define safe operating zones and automatically prevent machines from breaching them.
Safe operation of earthmoving equipment is dependent upon a human operator, but because we are all human we sometimes make mistakes.
