OTR tyres: Working through the wet

With unprecedented rains right across the top of the country, farmers are turning to OTR – Tyres, Wheels and Axles to help them through what has become a very wet period.

By selecting to fit OTR’s dual kit on their existing tractor setup, farmers are benefitting from extra traction and flotation, helping them increase pulling power.

Increased tyre surface area is also helping reduce ground compaction and making getting through those wet areas possible.

As OTR – Tyres, Wheels and Axles National Product Manager and Agriculture Business Development Manager Daryl Hynoski explains, with the fast installation, there is no need to replace tractor wheels or make expensive modifications.

“Simply fitting eye nuts to existing rim bolts to give anchorage for clamps is all that is required,” he said.

The power rail is continuously welded around the total circumference of the rim, giving full circle reinforcement against any side or torsional thrust, while the taper fit spacer band fits accurately against the tapered bead set of the rim, ensuring even load distribution.

Clamps are drop forged from high quality steel, ensuring trouble-free operations on the larger tractors.

“The best part is that fitting OTR duals is easy,” Daryl said.

“Wherever there is an eye nut on the tractor wheel, just fit a clamp to the power rail and lock the clamp with the lever supplied.

“Fast fitting and removal of duals is especially handy for tractors entering narrow gateways and workshops.

“The simplicity of the OTR dual system means they are economically priced and represent exceptional value for money.”

Fitting OTR’s dual kit brings the benefits of traction and flotation without the need to replace tractor wheels.

Fitting OTR Australia duals

Dual wheels improve grip, stability and versatility on tractors. They’re heavy, so users  have to ensure they don’t put themselves in a position where they may be trapped.

If wheels are stored upright, make sure they’re adequately secured.

The tyre pressure of the dual wheel should be about two PSI less than the pressure in the tractor tyre. Fitting of dual wheels is made simpler by driving the tractor wheel onto a block of wood.

Don’t position the tractor in a place where you may become trapped if the dual wheel falls over.

Plan the positioning of the eye nuts so they’re evenly spaced around the wheel, then tighten them using a steel Tommy bar.

Roll the dual wheel alongside the tractor wheel, then enter the spacer band at the dual wheel into the taper section of the tractor wheel.

Try a clamp and hook assembly, then adjust the assembly length to fit.

Adjust each assembly to give a tight fit and positive over-centre snap action as the wheel draws into the taper, making sure to keep shortening the clamp assembly. When the wheel is firmly into the bottom of the taper, the correct tension is produced by one person using full strength only with the lever applied, giving a strong over-centre action.

Next fit the R clip locking pin. During the first few hours’ work, the wheels bed in and further tightening of the clamps will be necessary. Check the clamp tension regularly.
