Michael Crosby has been announced as the next administrator of the CFMEU, replacing Mark Irving who stepped down recently after completing the first phase of administration.
Michael previously served as the union’s NSW executive officer.
“Mark’s leadership of the CFMEU through the most challenging period in the union’s recent history has positioned the union to enter a new and important phase,” Michael said.
“The new phase of the administration requires us to embed the achievements to date and begin a different phase of reform. New personnel are moving into place to implement the systems and processes required to ensure the union can operate lawfully, ethically, and eventually democratically. This implementation stage requires a different set of skills within the administration and within the union.
“The union is changing its personnel. It is changing its culture. It is working to regain its position in civil society. It is changing how it engages with employers, employer groups, regulators, governments, other unions and other industry partners.
“I look forward to continuing Mark’s hard work and delivering the necessary and vital change that is required to return the CFMEU to the strong and principled union it once was.”
Mark will continue to support the administration as senior counsel.
The Australian Constructors Association (ACA) has welcomed the appointment, with ACA CEO Peter Colacino saying the swift appointment was important to maintain the reform momentum already underway.
“There is a genuine opportunity to build on the progress achieved to date and deliver lasting change across the sector,” he said.
“Improving industrial relations is central to creating a productive, modern, high-performing and sustainable industry.
“The construction industry should not tolerate behaviours that would be unacceptable in any other workplace. Safe, respectful and lawful worksites are essential, and they go hand in hand with delivering projects efficiently.”
