With a host of new product releases over the past 12 months – including its biggest-ever launch of new machines in mid-2018 – Komatsu will have plenty to talk about with customers at this year’s Diesel Dirt & Turf (DDT) exhibition.
The company’s new product range includes 25 machines fitted with latest-technology Komatsu engines that deliver increased fuel efficiency, enhanced remote monitoring through its KOMTRAX tracking system, and significantly lower emissions.
It has also recently released new models in its intelligent Machine Control (iMC) range of excavators and dozers, which deliver industry-leading levels of accuracy, productivity and efficiency across bulk earthworks through to final trim.
And in early 2019, Komatsu launched its own-branded range of hydraulic breakers, specifically matched to Komatsu excavators from under 1 tonne to over 85 tonnes.
Examples of all these products will be on display at DDT, according to Chris Moroz, Komatsu’s Central Region Sales Manager.
Moroz said a further highlight of Komatsu’s display will be how it makes innovative use of information communications technology (ICT) and telematics to deliver higher productivity and efficiency, and lower operating costs to its customers.
“These include our KOMTRAX remote monitoring system – further enhanced on our latest machine releases, the semi-automation capabilities of our iMC technology offerings, and our groundbreaking Smart construction project and infrastructure asset management technology.
“The Komatsu team on site at DDT will be able to talk to customers about all aspects of our machines, our machine management innovations, and our complete project delivery technologies and capabilities,” he said.
Latest Generation Machines
Komatsu’s rollout of new fuel-efficient, low-emission engines that also deliver improved reliability and availability saw it launch an unprecedented 25 new machines across excavators, loaders, trucks and graders during 2018.
“With these new engines, Komatsu introduced new electronic control systems that ensure engine power, hydraulic requirements and transmission output is optimised – resulting in fuel consumption savings of between 5 per cent and 15 per cent – depending on models and applications,” said Moroz.
“In addition, all Komatsu’s new Tier 4 machines take advantage of the company’s latest developments in its KOMTRAX Step 5 telematics-based remote monitoring system to deliver owners and fleet managers even more data about key operating criteria.”
New Komatsu latest-generation engine machines released during 2018 – a number of which will be on show at DDT – included the following:
- PC30MR-5, PC35MR-5, PC45MR-5 and PC55MR-5 short-tail mini excavators
- PC78UU-10 and PC88MR-10 short-tail mini excavators

New Komatsu Breaker Line
Komatsu’s new range of breakers, which have operating weights from 65kg to 5589kg, covers mini excavators (0.7-7.5 tonnes), medium sized excavators (7.5-20 tonnes) and large excavators (20-90 tonnes).
Selected models will feature on its DDT stand.
According to Moroz, the new range brings industry-leading rock breaking technology to Komatsu’s entire construction excavator range.
“For many years, Komatsu has been recognised as offering the industry’s best range of excavators, in terms of performance, productivity, reliability, durability and cost of ownership,” he said.
“Now we are delighted to be able to offer a matched line of breakers, designed to work with our own excavator line, and backed by the full Komatsu support network across Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia.”
Moroz said the new Komatsu breaker range offered several unique advantages, including the variable frequency and energy system on selected models for higher productivity and lower maintenance costs.
“Combined with the low operating costs benefits of our excavator range, this means a Komatsu combined excavator/breaker package offers major benefits, including better productivity and performance, reduced downtime, lower cost per hour, and the industry’s leading service and support network,” he said.
Komatsu Intelligent Machine Control
As a pioneer in semi-automation – which is a first step towards full automation – Komatsu will be highlighting the capabilities of its iMC (intelligent Machine Control) offering at DDT.
The iMC concept takes complex earthmoving activities, such as digging, excavating, levelling and grading to high levels of precision.
“Our iMC concept, which allows machines such as excavators and bulldozers to excavate, bulk out and trim – all very complex tasks – according to preset design criteria,” Moroz said.
“This system is factory-integrated into select Komatsu machines and results in significant improvements in efficiency and productivity compared with conventional construction processes.
“Customers who’ve used this technology are seeing massive benefits from it, and we are already seeing multiple repeat orders from contractors and plant hirers throughout Australia and New Zealand.”
