Kobelco ‘Black Dog Excavator’ raising mental health awareness

South Australian construction hire business RAM Equipment has teamed up with the Black Dog Institute in support of mental wellbeing in the Australian construction industry.

The “Black Dog Excavator” is a 15t Kobelco SK135SR-7 machine specially painted black and branded with the logo of the Black Dog Institute.

The initiative has been established with the goal of raising $50,000 by June 2023 to support research, and treatment, and to raise awareness and support for mental health in the construction and industry.

The Black Dog Institute is a non-profit organisation based in Australia that focuses on mental health research, education, and advocacy. It has done extensive work in the construction sector, recognising that the industry’s unique challenges require tailored support.

“With the generous contributions of our network in the construction sector, prior to this event we are excited to have already raised over 95 per cent toward our $50,000 target”, said Kevin Grace, RAM Equipment Managing Director.

“We recognise the importance of mental health in construction and are committed to creating a greater awareness about the importance of safe and supportive environments for all who work in our industry, so every donation, no matter the size, will make a difference.”

Tom Koutsantonis, Member for West Torrens, said the South Australian Government was committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for its employees and contractors, and congratulated RAM Equipment and the Black Dog Institute on their efforts.

“The Black Dog Excavator campaign is a wonderful initiative to raise awareness of the importance of mental health in the workplace, and in particular, the mental health challenges faced by those in the construction industry,” he said.

While RAM Equipment’s campaign recently reached its $50,000 target, donations can still be made until 30 June 2023.
