Kidston Pumped Storage Hydro Project

McConnell Dowell Constructors (Aust) Pty Ltd and John Holland Pty Ltd in Joint Venture (MDJH JV) have been engaged by Kidston Hydro Project Co Pty Ltd (a Genex Power entity) as the EPC Contractor for the delivery of the 250MW Kidston Pumped Storage Hydro Project (“the Project”).

The Project will convert a disused gold mine into a pumped storage hydroelectric power generation facility that will use the pits of the old mine, with water run from the upper to the lower pit through two turbines at times of peak power demand and pumped back during low demand to restart the cycle. The construction involves significant underground infrastructure, including a large powerhouse cavern, and waterway shafts and tunnels to allow the transfer of water between the upper and lower reservoirs.

Works have commenced on the natural battery storage facility that has the potential to generate up to 250MW of rapid response, flexible power to Australia’s National Electricity Market. The facility will generate enough electricity to power 143,000 homes for eight hours.

  • Commissioning
