G.P.P. Industries gains from minimal swing, maximum performance

If you see orange machines hard at work recycling material or on a building site in Western Sydney, chances are they’re part of projects being undertaken by G.P.P. Industries.

Out in the Greater Western Sydney region, G.P.P. Industries has made a name for itself as a leader in infrastructure solutions, driven by a passion for sustainability, innovation, and community.

With more than three decades of experience, it continues to serve as a trusted partner for government projects and major developers across New South Wales.

Starting as a small operation specialising in bulk excavation for high-rise towers in Sydney’s CBD, the family-owned business now is involved in a range of activities, including general solid waste recycling; road/rail and utilities infrastructure; concrete constructions; and haulage and disposal. As well, it provides material supply and plant, truck and skip bin hires.

That’s quite some feat for a company which had humble beginnings in 1986, founded by Peter Mitropoulos, a visionary with a deep passion for construction and a commitment to excellence. Peter’s dedication and expertise quickly earned G.P.P. a reputation for reliability and quality.

In the mid-1990s, G.P.P. made a bold and forward-thinking move by opening an EPA- licensed waste facility in Chullora.

This facility was among the first of its kind, dedicated to recycling waste and minimising landfill impact.

The pioneering step established G.P.P. as a market leader in sustainable practices, setting the stage for its ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility.

In 2002, Peter’s son Theo joined the company, bringing fresh ideas and a renewed vision for the future.

Under Theo’s leadership, G.P.P. not only upheld its core values but also expanded its fleet, capabilities, and services. The company’s facility tripled in size, allowing it to explore new areas and significantly enhance its offerings.

Theo’s forward-thinking approach ensured that G.P.P. remained at the forefront of industry innovation while maintaining our family- oriented values.

“Our journey is a testament to the vision, hard work, and dedication of two generations of the Mitropoulos family,” Theo said.

The secret to success

To manage the number of projects it carries out efficiently, G.P.P. uses a fleet of 12 trucks and 15 machines.

And it is a tribute to the quality of the brand that almost all of the equipment — “about 95 per cent,” Theo said — is from Hitachi.

“Our first machines were purchased in 1987 when G.P.P. started up. We purchased two EX270 excavators specifically for a purpose – to conduct basement excavation works for high- rise towers in Sydney City.

The ZX345-7 can easily manoeuvre in between stockpiles.

“The decision was prompted because of the brand and its reputation. And we quickly understood why the Hitachis were well- regarded.

“There are so many features that make us come back to Hitachis: their reliability, functionality, cabin comfort, to the general operation of the machines.

“The machines all have unwavering power and performance and they operate smoothly and consistently.

“And they are comfortable, smooth, quiet and functional to use. Our operators love them.”

Of the current Hitachi models used by G.P.P., Theo singles out the ZX135 medium excavators for their versatility.

“The short-tail swing radius is ideal for job sites where space is limited,” he said.

“They can be transported at all hours as they are 2.5m wide and do not have any specific road curfews.

“They are mainly used for our loading, haulage and disposal service where we move around from job to job on a daily basis. They are also frequently used on our concrete slab replacement works.”

Theo said the ZX55 mini excavators were also a valuable asset, which were predominantly used on road, rail and utilities infrastructure projects.

Fast, powerful and fuel-efficient, they perform impressively on a variety of job sites, with the short swing making them especially suitable for tight spaces.

“The we have the ZW150 loaders which have exceptional manoeuvrability and operating performance,” Theo said.

“This machine works across our facility and undertakes a range of works including loading and pushing.”

The ZW150s were designed with both operator and owner in mind, incorporating features to enhance its operational efficiency and comfort, as well as to reduce running costs. A new hydraulic circuit facilitates the combined operation of the bucket and lift arm for loading and prioritises the use of the bucket for unloading.

G.P.P.’s newest excavator is the ZX345-7 excavator, a powerful and easy-to-maneouvre workhorse.

“We use it in our waste facility,” Theo said.

“Its performance is incredible. The large capacity minimal swing features are suitable for our operations as the machine can easily manoeuvre in between stockpiles.

“This machine replaced our 225 medium excavator, which we still use on our project sites. For our operations, this new 345-7 machine has increased production by 120 per cent.

“As well, the new Dash-7 machines have a lot more space in the cabs. The operators call it a lounge room.”

Theo said G.P.P. sourced the Hitachis from Hitachi Construction Machinery, Revesby.

“We specifically deal with Adam Scully there, who is great to deal with,” he said.

“He will answer my phone calls, even during the strange hours that I call him. He will go above and beyond to provide as much information and service as possible.

“He is really good at assisting with tailoring specifics of the machine to suit our requirements. The after sales support from Adam is also exceptional and he actions feedback or requests to back up the product he sells.

“The service is exceptional and is one of the main reasons why keep buying their machines.

“We perform a lot of works on the road at night and knowing that they will answer the phone and come out at 3am to sort an issue is comforting. It’s been done before.”

Theo said G.P.P. never looks past Hitachi.

“They haven’t given us any reason to look further and they keep getting better and better,” he said.

“As we look to the future, we remain committed to our founding principles, ensuring that G.P.P. continues to contribute positively to the communities we serve and the environment we cherish.

“As we continue to grow and adapt in a rapidly changing world, Hitachis will help our focus to lead the industry in sustainable practices, achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2035, and ensure a greener, more prosperous future for all.

“Our history is just the beginning, and we look forward to writing the next chapter together with our clients, partners, and community.”

Superior cabin comfort is among the features that make the Hitachis valued.
