Design updates for Cat® medium wheel loaders

Caterpillar product application specialist Dick Mars details the latest technology and performance updates to the line of new Cat® Next Generation medium wheel loaders.

The updated designs are aimed at increasing productivity and operating ease.

For example, the new auto front differential lock engages the differential lock to recover or maintain traction.

“Additionally, upgrades to both auto front and rear differential locks are options for the wheel loaders,” Dick said.

Currently, the auto lock is available on all 950 to 972 models with joystick steering as well as all 966 to 972 models with HMU (steering wheel) steering.

These medium wheel loaders feature improvements to the integrated braking system, or IBS, and new engine RPM deceleration.

“In addition, the new transmission neutraliser features smooth engagement and disengagement with the IBS pedal,” Dick said.

There is also refined technology.

“Caterpillar will release its new “Payload for Trade” that can be integrated into the Advanced Payload feature,” Dick said.

“The system will be certified, and after calibration and verification will weigh material with a very high level of accuracy as well as support Caterpillar’s new e-ticket reporting option.

“The system can be completely programmed with materials and truck IDs to facilitate customers specific needs in our productivity app or on the machine directly.

“Caterpillar has also developed a new standard job-aid widget that helps the operator in load-and-carry operations by automatically placing the bucket at the optimal height for stability and maximum material retention.

“Now linked to the work tool centre, improvements to the zero-angle work tool widget enable the setting of different zero angles for different work tools and attachments.”

The new e-ticketing system can send generated on-board weighing tickets as electronic tickets to any preprogrammed email address within seconds of finishing the loading cycle.

Three programmable buttons on the implement control pod afford quicker access to regularly used functions to improve operating efficiency.

Each operator can pull from over 25 different functions to customise and save their personal settings.

“All Next Gen loader models allow for customised profiles for customer-specific application, while new application profiles set multiple machine parameters with the press of one button to optimise settings for the job,” Dick said.

“Selectable on-screen job aids, along with streamlined new layout, facilitates loader operation, allowing operators of all experience levels to be more productive.

“Just one press of the button to set up application profiles that enables multiple machine parameters for the work being done, and you’re all set for the job.

“Key operating features – including Cat Payload, manual or auto tip-off, neutraliser settings and operating tips, and application profiles – are now available in the on-board display system. It’s very intuitive and user- friendly.”

Dick said that operators would be quick to notice the new e-ticketing feature that can also be used with the optional advanced payload and payload for trade.

It can send auto generated on-board weighing tickets as an electronic ticket to any preprogrammed email address within seconds of finishing the loading cycle, thereby reducing paper ticket handling in the cab.

“For Cat 966 XE, 972 XE, 980 XE and 982 XE models, two new settings in application profiles allow each operator to set customised forward/ reverse default speed ranges and rim pull limits,” Dick said.

“The speed and rim pull set limits are now visible to the operator on the front dash.

“Additionally, set site speed limits are shown on the operator settings screen, informing the operator of the established upper speed limit.”

All Next Gen loader models allow for customised profiles for customer-specific application.

A new optional tyre pressure monitoring system shows the tyre pressure on the main machine display. Sensors transmit pressure information wirelessly to the system, and the desired target pressure can be adjusted based on tyre type, manufacturer and model.

“Another new feature is that Cat Remote Flash and Remote Troubleshooting are now standard features,” Dick said.

“Downloaded software update installations can easily be initiated from the on-board display.”

Dealer remote troubleshooting functionalities have been expanded to include machine usage histograms and system calibrations.

In addition, by wirelessly connecting the machine to the office, VisionLink® gives access to production and essential machine health information for making fact-based decisions.

“Preventative maintenance interval tracking can now be synchronised with VisionLink, due-time reminders and overdue events are now shown to the operator on the display. It’s a no-brainer,” Dick said.

As always Caterpillar have operating convenience and safety at front of mind.

“Caterpillar will introduce a new collision warning system with reverse motion inhibit feature that will further enhance operational safety,” Dick said.

“Our system combines the radar and smart camera at the rear of the machine to deliver a reliable personnel detection system.

“This new feature builds on the already popular optional 360-degree camera system using this enhanced hardware.

“Operators will also notice the elevated comfort and convenience in the next generation wheel loader cab.”

A new optional tyre pressure monitoring system shows the tyre pressure on the main machine display.

Standard on premium cabs and optional for comfort and deluxe trim lines, a new left footrest improves operator comfort to the IBS pedal in powershift loader models and the deceleration pedal for XE models.

Also, for all XE models, improvement to the speed range thumb roller adds a haptic detent for selection between 0.1 and 1.0 increments.

For 2- and 3-implement hydraulic functions, a new side grip implement joystick is available on all joystick steering models.

“Operators will really see the improved comfort and precise accuracy in terms of machine control,” Dick said.

“The improved optional active carbon cab prefilter is designed to protect the operator environment from dust and particles.

“It also allows for easier retrofits and upgrades.”
