CPB and Sydney Metro: Transformational tunnelling

More than 23,000 workers, 11 tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and an army of excavators are what it has taken for CPB Contractors to construct more than 80 kilometres of tunnels and caverns for Sydney’s transformational Sydney Metro project.

With more than 100 kilometres of rail track laid and the Chatswood to Sydenham stretch recently opened, CPB Contractors has been part of the Sydney Metro journey since the very beginning.

Its teams have delivered 100 per cent of the tunnelling works for the Sydney Metro line running from Tallawong in Sydney’s Northwest through to the heart of Sydney’s CBD.

The successful construction of these works includes the delivery of:

  • Epping to Chatswood Rail Link – 12.5 kilometres of twin tunnels tunnelling between Epping and Chatswood.
  • Northwest Rail Link Project – 15km of twin tunnels tunnelling between Bella Vista and Epping with 30km of track laid.
  • Northwest Rapid Transit – 23km of rail systems fit-out and track laid between Bella Vista and Epping.
  • Sydney Metro City & Southwest Project – 15.5km of twin tunnels tunnelling between Chatswood and Marrickville, with 31km of track laid.
  • Sydney Metro City & Southwest Linewide Project – 31km of rail systems fit-out and track laid between Chatswood and Marrickville.

An engineering and tunnelling feat, the construction of Sydney Metro included tunnelling, track-laying and fit-out works under Sydney Harbour and through the CBD, with these twin tunnels and tracks now able to move more people across the Harbour during peak-hour than the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Harbour Tunnel combined.

Beyond tunnelling, excavation and tracklaying, CPB Contractors also excavated all the station boxes and underground caverns along the City & Southwest line, as well as access and maintenance shafts in a joint venture.

CPB Contractors’ joint venture delivery of the Sydney Metro Line-wide Works Project, alongside fellow CIMIC Group company UGL, included 31km of tunnel fit-out, installation of power systems and ventilation, the upgrading of the train maintenance facilities at Rouse Hill and the construction of a new facility at Marrickville to accommodate up to 19 new metro trains.  At the same time, CPB Contractors also delivered Sydney Metro’s Gadigal Station Over Station Development in Sydney’s CBD.

CPB Contractors Managing Director Jason Spears said the company was proud to have delivered the biggest combined packages of work for Australia’s biggest public transport project, providing a fast, reliable and sustainable commute that will benefit Sydneysiders for generations to come.

“Since starting work in the North West more than ten years ago, our people have worked with commitment to deliver what will be a legacy for Sydney commuters, which is now providing a seamless metro journey between Tallawong and Sydenham in less than an hour,” h said.

“Sydney Metro is a celebration of powerful partnerships and industry collaboration with CPB Contractors working closely with Sydney Metro and 28 delivery partners bringing together civil construction excellence and mechanical and electrical expertise.”
