Out of more than 5000 competitors and nine finalists, an Australian operator has finished on top at the 2023 Cat® Global Operator Challenge finals at CONEXPO-CON/AGG in Las Vegas.

The event, hosted by ‘Dirty Jobs’ host Mike Rowe and Caterpillar’s Jason Hurdis, featured three individual challenges – using a wheel loader, backhoe loader, and excavator. Each challenge gave the finalists the chance to show off the skills that make them some of the world’s top operators in construction.

Patrick Doheny, Director of Melbourne civil construction business CRE Group, showed off his 25 years of earthmoving experience, taking out first place with a total overall time of 26 minutes, 49 seconds.

Patrick also claimed top spot in the Wheel Loader Challenge with a time of 8 minutes 45 seconds.

“I am beyond thrilled to have earned the title of the best Caterpillar machine operator on the planet,” Patrick said. “Kudos to Caterpillar for hosting such an incredible event to highlight the importance of our profession. It is truly a dream come true to see your life’s passion be rewarded in such an amazing way.”

Also among the nine finalists was fellow Australian Nick Thompson, who put in a valiant effort representing South Australia’s Modcon Civil.
