ACCIONA electric drill drives sustainability

The Liebherr ‘LB 30 Unplugged’ electric drill rig, the world’s largest capacity fully battery-operated unit of its type, is reducing emissions and noise pollution at the Kananook train stabling yard in Victoria.

Global sustainable infrastructure solutions leader ACCIONA is the first to own and operate a fully electric drill rig for an Australian infrastructure project.

Its new rig is reducing emissions and noise pollution at the yard facility, part of the state’s Level Crossing Removal Project. It is enabling ACCIONA to contribute to the delivery of the local project in a more sustainable way.

ACCIONA Chief Executive Officer Australia and New Zealand, Bede Noonan, said across the company’s projects, it was actively incorporating the latest technology advancements to reduce the environmental impacts of construction projects.

“The electric drill rig is reducing the overall project emissions at the new train maintenance facility in Kananook and is a great example of how we are driving more sustainable outcomes,” he said.

“On this site alone, the electric rig will reduce CO2 emissions by 15 tonnes – a reduction of emissions comparable to avoiding a return flight from Melbourne to Sydney. It also has the added advantage of no engine noise – mitigating noise pollution for the local community.

“As new technology is released around the world, we will continue to be an early adopter of hybrid, electric and hydrogen equipment and vehicles to further reduce our environmental footprint.”

ACCIONA is committed to achieving a 60 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030. In 2022, ACCIONA reduced its emissions in Australia and New Zealand by 15 per cent, and more than 90 per cent of investments in Australia were directed towards sustainable activities, including building wind farms and electric railways.

Globally, the company has been carbon neutral since 2016.

In Australia, ACCIONA has evolved from a rich history of local companies which have delivered complex, sustainable, and iconic projects across this country for over 100 years. With a business that spans the entire value chain, from design and construction through to operation and maintenance, ACCIONA combines deep Australian knowledge with global experience to deliver a broad portfolio of sustainable infrastructure solutions, now and into the future, that are enhancing the lives of all Australians.
