A Commitment to Innovation Keeps Tilly’s Moving Forward

As an Australian family-owned company with global reach, Tilly’s Crawler Parts are proud to stock over 43,000 new parts for earthmoving machinery. From their base in Toowoomba, Queensland, the Tilly’s team ships quality parts across Australia and around the world.

“The right part, at the right price, right now has been Tilly’s mantra for as long as we can remember,” says Lance Hinrichsen, Tilly’s General Manager.

“But while our brand promise remains constant, some things have changed in the last three decades. Our legacy lies in dismantling machinery and selling used parts for Cat, Komatsu and other brands, but Tilly’s core business is now supplying new quality alternatives to OEM parts.”

The Tilly’s name has been trusted for over 35 years by owner- operators, fleet owners, contractors and mechanical maintenance companies in the agricultural and construction sectors. The shift to an extensive range of genuine alternative parts has seen the company make major investments in technology and innovation in recent years to better service their thousands of valued customers.

“With 97 per cent of our customer base outside our immediate geographic area, the efficiencies of our processes have become even more important,” states Lance. “For our customers, machine down-time means money, so ensuring we have the right parts out to them in the fastest possible time is essential.”

There are several ways Tilly’s ensures the seamless provision of parts to operators. The first is the extensive experience of the sales team who have over 200 years of combined industry knowledge. The parts interpreters can determine their customer’s needs from even the most basic information, with 90 per cent of orders processed and despatched within hours.

In the warehouse, the installation of a bank of Modula Vertical Lifts, which house over 6700 parts lines has reduced the pick surface in just two of the lifts from 123m to a mere 7m, allowing for greater efficiencies in order fulfillment and despatch.

“Tilly’s commitment to innovation has included a Kaizen (change for the better or continuous improvement) project, which was focused on process and improved efficiency in supply chain management.

The result of this is the implementation of new software which will improve efficiency and productivity across the entire company. This is a substantial investment in Australian- developed ERP software and one which we believe will have multiple benefits for the future,” explains Lance.

“If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that we must continually look at things differently and ensure that we can adapt and change with the times.

“As we have committed to doing that this year, we have seen other businesses in our region do the same, and watched them thrive despite the environment. We have chosen to acknowledge this by sponsoring the Innovation Category in the Toowoomba Business Excellence Awards in December.

“We’ve seen so many great benefits from always looking forward that we want to encourage other businesses to do the same. We are convinced that what got us here, will not get us there – that attitude has been our focus this year and we are very proud to say it has resulted in the best year in Tilly’s history.”
